Green Gardening Skills East – Step Into Horticulture Programme

Programme Length: 4 weeks (4 days per week)
Qualification: City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Horticulture
Start Date: 5 January 2026

Overview

Groundwork London is delivering a free Step Into Horticulture training programme at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, designed to help local residents launch a career in green spaces, gardening, and grounds maintenance.

This programme includes practical training, employability coaching, and the opportunity to receive support from leading industry employers including idverde.

Participants will gain hands-on experience, a Level 1 qualification, and access to interviews for live vacancies upon completion.

What You Will Learn

  • Maintaining flower beds and planting
  • Use of a range of hand tools and small horticultural machinery
  • Plant identification fundamentals
  • Practical gardening sessions to apply your skills
  • Educational visits to major London parks and green spaces
  • Full employability support, including CV help and interview preparation

Eligibility

To join the programme, you must:

  • Live in Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, or Newham
  • Be aged 18+
  • Be currently unemployed and not in training or education
  • Have proof of right to work in the UK

Practical Information

  • Expect moderate to strenuous physical activity (planting, pruning, using tools)
  • Safety boots and gloves provided
  • Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing
  • Bring a packed lunch and water
  • Good timekeeping and a positive attitude are essential
  • Includes 1-to-1 support from a dedicated Employment Advisor

Progression & Next Steps

Following the programme, participants will receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Horticulture
  • Support to apply for job opportunities through Groundwork’s employer network
  • Ongoing support for live vacancies with partner employers
