We recently delivered the East Green Gardening Skills programme, a free 6-week horticulture course based at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, designed to help participants build skills, confidence, and qualifications to start a career in the green space sector.

Run as part of Groundwork London’s Step into Horticulture initiative and supported by employers including idVerde, the course was fully booked and brought together learners from across East London for a packed and practical learning experience.

What Participants Learned

  • Safe use of hand tools and small horticultural machinery

  • Plant identification and care

  • Practical gardening sessions to apply their skills

  • Educational visits to some of London’s most iconic parks and green spaces

  • Gained a City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Horticulture

What the Programme Involved

  • Moderate to strenuous outdoor tasks like planting, pruning, and tool use

  • All PPE provided, including safety boots and gloves

  • Sessions delivered 4 days per week, combining hands-on learning with one-to-one support from a dedicated Employment Advisor
