Brief Description

As part of Network Rails commitment to “Creating a cleaner, greener, socially responsible railway” we are looking for an Ecologist with a strong background in ecological and mitigation advice. You will provide ecological leadership to our various frontline rail operations and delivery teams across the Southern Region’s expansive and diverse network. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a unique ‘national green corridor’ and have a major impact on major UK infrastructure.

Job Purpose

To provide ecological expertise to Delivery Units, to enable the route teams to effectively manage ecological risks and constraints. This would include the identification, assessment and mitigation of ecological receptor. To support with integration of ecological element of the environment management system, to deliver compliance and legislative obligations.

Key Accountabilities

1. Undertake and complete a range of ecological field surveys, including protected species, invasive and habitat surveys.

2. Collate, write up and review survey results and mapping target notes and review to identify appropriate recommendations.

3. Analyse and interpret data, using specialist software programs. Produce reports to a high technical standard within prescribed timescales to cover ecology requirements.

4. Support the management of implementing and embedding recommendations to deliver continual improvement.

5. Advise on appropriate mitigation strategies and enhancement measures, utilising results of surveys and liaising with Environmental Specialist’s and the Arboriculture team.

6. Provide office and field based support through specialist ecological advice, guidance and supervision to site managers, engineers, planners, and others associated with the undertaking and completion of surveys and / or assessments.

7. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including contractors, statutory bodies, local authorities, and members of the public.

8. Assist and contribute to the production of other sustainability periodic and ad-hoc reports.

9. Support with biodiversity net gain strategy

10. Support with national, regional and local projects and initiatives

11. Carry out research as required.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications


  • Comprehensive field experience
  • An appropriate academic qualification in Ecology or a related discipline. Good understanding and working knowledge of ecology, legislation and survey best practice
  • Be able to identify baseline Ecological constraints during site visits
  • Ability to complete protected species surveys
  • Good interpersonal, influencing, communication and organisation skills
  • Task orientated team player and who is also comfortable working independently
  • Ability to write clear, concise reports
  • Full/associate/graduate membership of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) (depending on experience) or eligible for this.


  • Knowledge of operational railway environment
  • Knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard
  • One or more protected species licences e.g. GCN, bat or dormouseExperience attending client meetings and working with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Competent with Microsoft Office
  • Full UK driving licence
Salary: £43,588 to £49,037 + additional location allowance of £3,270.
