Hours: 5 hours/week during term time (3 hours teaching + 2 hours planning) + 2 hours/week during holidays
Salary: £30 per hour

Job Description

Mill Hill Schools are seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Teacher Gardener to lead gardening sessions for pupils, maintain and develop the school’s garden, and help lay the groundwork for a future market garden project. This exciting opportunity blends teaching, planning, and hands-on horticulture.

You’ll work with children aged 3–18, fostering a passion for sustainability, biodiversity, and food growing. If you love inspiring young minds, this is the perfect role for you!

Key Responsibilities

Teaching (3 hours/week – Term time):

  • Deliver engaging, age-appropriate gardening sessions focused on growing fruit, vegetables, herbs, and flowers
  • Support pupils in practical gardening tasks such as planting, composting, harvesting, and weeding
  • Promote sustainability, teamwork, and responsibility through hands-on experience
  • Adapt sessions to various age groups and learning styles

Garden Planning & Maintenance (2 hours/week – Term time & holidays):

  • Maintain garden areas (weeding, watering, planting)
  • Prepare materials for lessons and manage tools safely
  • Plan development of a long-term market garden
  • Ensure the garden space is safe, inclusive, and accessible

What We’re Looking For

Essential:

  • Solid knowledge of organic gardening and food growing
  • Great communication with children and adults
  • Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently
  • Passionate about nature, sustainability, and education
  • DBS clearance (or willingness to undergo one)

Desirable:

  • Experience working with children in schools or outdoor settings
  • First Aid training (or willingness to complete)
