Job Description

The City of London Corporation is looking for an experienced Environmental Health Officer to join its Port Health and Public Protection Division, specialising in Pollution Control and Private Rented Sector Housing.

This is an opportunity to use your environmental health expertise to tackle complex environmental challenges in the Square Mile and surrounding areas.

From managing construction noise and investigating pollution complaints to housing inspections and enforcement, your work will contribute directly to protecting public health, environmental quality and the sustainability of the City of London. 

About the Role

As an Environmental Health Officer, you’ll deliver both proactive and reactive environmental protection services.

You’ll work on complex pollution cases, investigate environmental concerns, contribute to planning and licensing processes and work with partners to help ensure the City remains a safe and healthy place to live and work.

The position also offers the opportunity to influence policy, support junior colleagues and build partnerships across different organisations and sectors. 

Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

• Leading on complex pollution control cases
• Carrying out risk-based environmental inspections
• Reviewing licensing and planning applications
• Managing high-impact environmental complaints
• Assessing applications for out-of-hours noisy works, including Section 61 applications
• Preparing enforcement notices, technical reports and committee briefings
• Investigating private rented sector housing enforcement cases
• Supervising junior officers and mentoring students
• Representing the City of London Corporation at professional forums
• Developing partnerships with external organisations and agencies
• Participating in the out-of-hours Duty Manager rota, for which a casual standby allowance applies
• Occasionally working outside core hours, with Time Off in Lieu arrangements 

About You

The City of London Corporation is looking for someone who has:

• A degree in Environmental Health
• Registration with the Environmental Health Officers Registration Board (EHORB)
• Experience working in pollution control
• Knowledge of construction noise and infrastructure impacts
• Knowledge of private sector housing enforcement, including Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) assessments
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Experience preparing enforcement notices and technical documents
• Strong stakeholder-management and partnership-working skills
• Confidence using Microsoft Office and specialist environmental health software

A postgraduate qualification in acoustics or another relevant environmental health discipline would be desirable.
